Heart Checks

Preface, pg. 10: “He [Jesus] was simply doing what His Father told Him to do, and doing it with delight.”

Jesus served the Father with a beautiful attitude, not begrudgingly or with bitterness. As I reflect on my attitude when I’m serving God, of course there are times when I do it very willingly and excitedly, but there are definitely times when my service towards God is tainted by my sin, often manifesting itself in a half-hearted, lukewarm attitude. Instead of seeing it for the privilege that it is, I don’t always serve God with “delight” but do it because I’m expected to, because of my title as staff, or worse yet, to build up my own ego/reputation. When I’m doing anything out of my love for God – whether it’s ministry or something as basic as my devotions – I have to constantly check my heart and consider why I’m doing what I’m doing. I’m reminded of Matthew 15:8, which says, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” God is interested in my heart and the attitude with which I am serving Him, not on results or anything I can “do” for Him. So to sum up, heart checks are KEY!
